Adult ADD: More Delegation Tips

Google

Why don?t we talk a little bit about the delegation process, especially if people are just starting with delegation?

You either have no experience or maybe you have some experience, but you haven?t had either good or effective experience with delegation. Part of the problem may have to do with your ADD.

It's sometimes hard for ADD people to let go because they like to be in control. That's okay, but you can really get so much more accomplished when you delegate things you don't want to do. That doesn't mean you're lazy. It just means that you want more time to do the things you like to do. That's important for everyone.

So, let's walk you through the whole thing with delegation. When you have ADD, there are two primary things for you to remember:

First, you have to get your head straight and get the mindset down. Learn to control your ADD so that it's working with you, not against you.

Second, you need to know what to do on a practical day to day level--how to exactly pull it off and make it fly. Writing a schedule of what you want to delegate and when is a good way for ADD people to make this work.

Still, the first thing is your mindset, and the reason is because it?s not good enough to just say, ?All right, guys, I?m going to start delegating!? It?s doesn?t mean anything. Delegating is a skill that you want to master in order to accomplish something bigger in your life than you?re already accomplishing, and starting it is sometimes a battle with your ADD.

So, you need to figure out, Why do I want to delegate? Is it because I want to do less work, or because I want to do more of the things I love to do with my work? Maybe it?s somewhere in between. What you?re talking about is really boiling it down with why you want to get rid of some of the tasks that are in your life ? why specifically. At the end of the day, you need a reason.

The next things is what do you really hate to do? How can you change those things in your life? Maybe it's doing the laundry. Maybe it's washing the car, cleaning the windows, building web pages, writing emails, whatever it is--in your business and your personal life--why do you hate them and how can you use your ADD brain to get them completed by someone else?

Make a list! Believe it or not, almost every task in life is really delegable. You can delegate picking up the dry cleaning, grocery shopping, taking the dog for a walk, writing blog posts, doing web site graphics, and on and on. Think of everything you hate to do. Making a list will help your ADD brain to get into that mindset.

Of course, there are some tasks that can't be delegated. For instance, you can't get other people to sleep for you, to work out for you, or to eat for you. You can't get other people to take your showers, but you can get people to take care of your hair and fingernails or toe nails. But think about it. Almost everything else is delegable. Wrap your ADD creativity around it and see what you can come up with.

The thing is, if you want to have more leisure time to pursue the things you want to enjoy in life, or if you just want to have more time to work on things you want to work on, then you have to train your ADD brain that you're going to delegate the tasks you aren't interested in doing. Once you get into that mindset and start doing it every day, you'll find that you're a much happier person because you can use your ADD hyperfocus to concentrate on the things you love to do.
